In 1999, high-profile BBC TV presenter Jill Dando was shot on her own doorstep in West London.
Two years later, Barry George was convicted of her murder. There were gasps in the gallery anb amongst the media when the guilty verdict was passed.
The evidence was deemed questionable and there are accusations that due the high-profile case, police were under pressure to get a result - and fast.
Barry George was a loner and in the lowest 1% of mental stability in the country.
True there was a liking of guns and a sexual assault conviction but is he a murderer?
The main piece of evidence revolves around a molecule of gun shot found in the pocket of the coat Barry George was wearing at the time.
Subsequent gun experts have questioned this. The coat wasn't bagged up and immediately taken to forensics. It was taken to a photo lab and put on a tailord dummy where just TWO WEEKS previous firearms had been in the same lab.
Molecules float in the are and it is highly possible one slipped in a pocket during its time there. What about other evidence? Psychologists have stated George doesn't have the mental strength to perform a calculated murder. Eye-witnesses saw a man with shoulder length hair. Look at the photo - this is how George always had his hair cut.
Police said he retraced his steps on the day of the murder, asking various people to write down when and where her had been that day. He was looking for alibis the police said. In fact, this was normal behaviour for George. He has a short memory and would often do this. Of course, memory loss isn't helpful at all during questioning.
The first appeal of 2005 failed. The second appeal is happening now and it all hinges on the molecule found in his coat.
If innocent then many will feel justice has prevailed. Let's not forget Jill Dando. A pretty, down to earth lady, recently engaged lost her life to a cold-blooded killer.
